Building Department

The Building Department is responsible for administering and if needed, enforcing the Building, Health and Property Maintenance codes of the federal, state, county and local Village Ordinances.

We pride ourselves in assisting our residents & contractors with seeking compliance with the codes.

Our mission is to promote general health, safety, and welfare to the residents of Thornton.

This mission is fulfilled by:
  • Assisting residents with the code & permit process. 
  • Working with developers and contractors in achieving their goals.
  • Providing inspectional services.
  • Assistance in interpreting the building codes and the municipal codes of the Village.
  • Administration and compliance of the Village of Thornton Ordinances as they relate to the buildings and properties located in the Village.
  • Continued education and training.
  • Working with Village departments in a coordinated effort.
  • Active members of the International Code Council (ICC), South Suburban Building Officials Association (SSBOA), & South Suburban Environmental Health Council. (SSEHC)

Radon is a radioactive gas that can enter homes through:
  1. Cracks in solid floors.
  2. Construction Joints.
  3. Cracks in walls.
  4. Gaps in suspended floors.
  5. Gaps around service pipes.
  6. 6.  Cavities inside walls.
